Amsterdam has always been known as Europe’s denim capital, but twice a year the city turns a notably deeper shade of blue as the global denim community descends on the city for the Kingpins fabric fair. The A/W 20 edition held in April, attracted around 2000 denim industry insiders to shop the latest innovations and fabric offerings from the shows stellar exhibitors and partners.

This season, the Kingpins team invited British photographer and film-maker John Turner to capture the show. John is no stranger to the denim community. He lensed the stunning portraits in WORN publications and has travelled the US digging for vintage denim with Redbull in his 2015 documentary ‘In Search of Blue Gold‘. His shooting style combines beautiful and thoughtful human imagery, and is neatly tied together with his trademark documentary style of narrative. He loves working with real people, in real situations. John extended his passion for people and denim through a selection of special medium format portraits which were taken in and around the surroundings of the Kingpins show in Westerpark. Jojhn spoke on the images saying “I’ve returned to shooting on film for many reasons. One of which is the consideration and discipline required when you choose this medium; each frame is precious so nothing can be rushed. This need for serenity creates a fantastic relationship between subject and shooter. And this is without mentioning how glorious a visual outcomes this produces.”
