Men's Mid-Century Modern @ Jacket Required

Amy LevertonComment

Thomas has just published my round-up from last week's Jacket Required show and I have topped that up with the more fashion driven brands that caught me eye, check the post below. When putting it together I realised what I really wanted to comment on was the key trend infiltrating the mens denim market at both the show and on the runways for SS16. There were a few similarities in item, styling and vibe and although everyone interpreted the look in a different way, I felt like the images sat so well together.

Sporty stripes, stadium jackets and retro varsity takes over jacket required

Here are some of the key pieces that stood out for me from the show. Each brand credited under the photo:

Edwin's Stadium Jacket

Wide indigo and white stripes were prevalent on many stands and this Edwin jacket really sums up the aesthetic of this trend. They've taken the classic and clean stadium jacket with press-stud fastening closure and simple welt pocket. Adding a drawstring and elasticated cuffs cements the sporty vibe and the varsity inspired patch nails it.

Only & Sons Sporty Two Piece

Only & Sons Sporty Two Piece

Only & Sons were looking really good this season and I particularly like this sporty take on the two piece thats still hitting hard in the mens market right now. A lightweight chambray pant and matching shirt with clean zip-through styling is a spot-on combo for next SS.

Waven's Blouson

Waven also tapped the sporty jacket shape, this time with a clean zip-through opening and  lovely stitch-through pocket detailing that taps that Americana attitude. This piece was in a beautifully dusty herringbone fabric with an allover launder that made for a cleaner, sportier look.

Bethnals Pinstripe Two Piece

Bethnals killed it this season with a wide-set pinstripe matching set that combined workwear styling with a sporty-sartorial look. Notice again the all-over, slightly purple cast launder.

Kings Of Indigo's 50's Slogan Chore

Nothing says mid-century like a nice chain stitched back embroidery. Combining a retro script with a clean sans is another box ticked. Ecru with black, navy or red: tick! This jacket really knocked it out of the park for me.

Eat Dust's 60's Pop-Over

Eat Dust's 60's Pop-Over

So keep your eyes out for a blog post on Eat Dust's SS16 collection in a couple of days. I loved it so much I felt it needed an extra post all to itself! They actually looked at 60's surf and skate culture for this collection but I think the vibe is along the same vein. I love this clean and fresh popover that combines activewear references with a purist denim attitude.

Waven's Sport Short

Waven also released matching sets in pinstripes: both faded down as well as darker indigo like this one. Simple, pull-on styling and a mid-length, 90's inseam. Pretty much every brand had a version of this short but these were my faves.

Kings Of Indigo's Bold Striped Shirt

Kings of Indigo were all over this trend and I really liked their super bold stripe, which they used on this shirt as well as a two piece (See my previous blog post on their lookbook)

Edwin's Baseball Shirt

Edwin's Baseball Shirt

Of course where would this trend be without a re-worked baseball shirt?! Of course we've been seeing this shape around for a good few seasons now but I like what Edwin have done with the twisted yarn fabric, it gives it that extra element of denim authenticity as well as a retro vibe, which is a good item to end on!
