I was just sent this brilliant lookbook from the guys at Wrangler Australia and its awesome. The Aussie design team decided to take the athleisure trend in a retro direction for their northern hemisphere SS15 collection to mirror Wranglers strong vintage roots. They looked at Olivier Newton John's 'Lets Get Physical' music video and captured the simplistic sportswear attitude and combined it with indigo styling.
The guys at Wrangler Australia always have a very clear direction as far as aesthetic is concerned and this lookbook really captures that. I've been lucky enough to meet and brainstorm with Marcella, Nathan and team over in Melbourne. As well as being lovely people, they really live the retro attitude of Wrangler and totally understand the brand. Wrangler is doing really well over in Aus and from these photos its really clear to see why. The collection shows a very direct aesthetic and a confident message, something that many brands lack these days. Go team Wrangler Aus!
What's also interesting is the direction Wrangler are taking the activewear trend exactly mirrors a movement I've been seeing emerge over the last 6 months or so. Nigel Cabourne has tapped a similar look with his Fred Perry collaboration and Todd Snyder does a great job of the retro heritage locker room style. On a recent trip to Tokyo I noticed brands like Champion following a similar look. Granted, their aesthetic is more of a heritage 40's slant but parallels can definitely be drawn. Designers such as Gosha Rubchinskiy have also tapped a more 80's activewear vibe for both SS15 and AW15/16.
I've only been back 4 days and these pictures are making me miss Venice Beach!! Can't wait to get back there in August.
